How to Plan a Day trip to Pisa & take some silly shots with the Leaning Tower

No trip to Toscana is complete without a day trip to Pisa – to Piazza dei Miracoli. The Square of Miracles has gained international fame thanks to its leaning tower and its peculiar inclination. It is home to other marvelous monuments- the Cathedral, the Baptistery and the cemetery, all pure white standing out over the lush green ground representing the circle of life.

How to do a day trip to Pisa from Florence

When visiting Italy, make sure to do a day trip to Pisa. You can get to Pisa by train from Florence to visit the Square of Miracles.  Get off at the San Rossore rail station, it’s only a 15 minutes walk to the square. The direct, high-speed train to Pisa takes just 50 minutes from Florence. As you pass through the tiny gate of the walls that surround Pisa’s old center, you’ll be immediately struck by the sight that appears before your eyes: the massive square firmly stands right there leaving you totally awestruck!

Tip: Check the rail system in Italy for schedules and rates and book your tickets ahead.

The Leaning Tower of Pisa

Leaning Tower, which is more than 50 meters high and the bell tower to the cathedral standing off to its side. It is known worldwide for its unintended tilt to one side, due to the weak nature of the ground below it, inadequate to support the tower’s structure from the very beginning. Built between the 12th and 13th centuries, the tower started leaning before it was even finished!

These days, visitors can climb to the top of the tower for a small ticket fee.

Did you know that the Duomo also leans a little like the leaning tower of Pisa.  The Baptistery, the largest one in Italy is dedicated to St. John the Baptist and there is a statue of him on the top of the dome.

If you get on top of the bell tower, you can pretend to be the famous Italian scientist Galileo Galilei, who is said to have performed gravity experiments from the tower to demonstrate if the speed of descent of bodies could be independent of their mass.  But don’t start dropping things from the tower and get into trouble, just take some goofy pictures like everyone else!

Don’t miss the Duomo and the Baptistery

The Leaning Tower dominates the town and the Miracle Square but there is more. There is an 11th-century Duomo full of gorgeous art, the elaborate Baptistery, and other beautiful palaces. Go on an amazing inside tour to learn about the Cathedral, Baptistery, the famous Leaning Tower and visit all the monuments. You can also climb the tower.  We took the train for our day trip to Pisa but you can check out one of these tours from Florence if you would rather not take the train.
