Pray for Chennai, but also a Call to action… Help Chennai!

Praying for my home town Chennai. Heavy rains has caused severe flooding in the ‪‎Indian‬ city of Chennai and surrounding areas. The rain is expected to continue causing more damage .. Several areas have 6+ feet of water, roads inaccessible and food and supplies limited! Please try a Google search for the images of several areas, roads, bridges underwater and people marooned. Praying that the rain stops and help arrives for those in need!  Being a thousand miles away all you can do is pray, feel helpless and hope that friends and family are safe.  But just praying is not enough… here are some avenues we can donate (that I trust)…  We cannot change the course of natural calamities but together we change the aftermath and help the recovery.  There is no doubt the water logged Chennai will rise again, but needs our help!

Materials Needed for Chennai:

Clean drinking water(bottled)
Blankets
Shoes
Kids clothes, Used / New clothes
Non perishable foods (canned food)
but the immediate need is monetary donations that will get there faster.

San Francisco Bay Area Tamil Manram (www.sfbatm.org) is 501-c(3) non-profit tax exempt organization, organizing the “Chennai Flood Relief” campaign to gather fund and materials for the impacted people in Chennai and Cuddalore area. Please spread the news around and increase visibility and awareness to aid. Bay Area Tamil Manram will work with TNF (Tamilnadu Foundation), Red Cross, Uthavum Karangal and any other non-profit organization to make sure our efforts are delivered without delay and wastage. We are still working on the logistics involved in delivering the effort. Also, there are group of doctors and NOPs providing medical aids in Cuddalore and Chennai area who need more financial help. We will identify such groups and transfer fund to those NPOs as well. To donate for this effort, you can go to http://tinyurl.com/huxwkgz

Donate at www.STFNonProfit.org, a Dallas Fortworth based not-for-profit organization if you would like to join the efforts by STF.

Organizations such as Udavum Karangal is in need of Cots, Hospital Rexin beds, pillows, bed sheets, furniture, kitchen utensils etc. that were washed away/damaged during the earlier floods in November.  This is an organization that I have worked with during my days there and trust that the funds will go to the right hands.

Tamil Nadu Foundation is a nonprofit foundation created in 1974 by a group of Americans of Tamil origin who wanted to help people from their native province of Tamil Nadu in India. TNF is focused on medium to long-term needs of the flood victims in selected communities where they already have a strong network of paid employees and trusted partners. http://tnfusa.org/donate/

  2. I’ve only heard about this from other bloggers and have not seen it on news much here in UK. Praying for safety and ease for the people of Chennai.
